Catholic Deacons serve a vital role in the tapestry of those who serve. In the Acts of the Apostles, Acts 6:1-6 we read about the first deacons being appointed to assist the apostles by caring for the needs of the community, particularly the poor and marginalized. This ministry of service has continued through the centuries, evolving to meet the changing needs of the Church and society.
Deacons focus on a threefold ministry of service: the Word, the Liturgy, and Charity.
Ministry of the Word
You may have attended mass where the deacon reads the Gospel and then delivers a homily. Their preaching is rooted from their personal experiences and their commitment to serving the community. This connection to the everyday lives of the faithful allows deacons to deliver homilies that are relatable, inspiring, and deeply relevant.
Ministry of the Liturgy
Deacons assist at the altar during Mass, preparing the Eucharist, and distributing Holy Communion. They also have the privilege of performing baptisms, witnessing marriages, and presiding over funerals and wakes.
Ministry of Charity
Perhaps the most important role of a deacon is their ministry of charity. Deacons are actively involved in the Church’s outreach, helping the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, and the marginalized. They often lead community service projects and offer pastoral care to those in need. This charitable work is at the core of a deacon’s calling: to serve everyone, just as Christ did.
Answering the Call
Becoming a deacon is a special calling that needs careful thought, training, and dedication. Those who choose this path go through thorough theological and pastoral education to prepare them for serving the Church. Their commitment to this role shows their strong faith and dedication to serving God and His people.
Ordained in May of 2023, Deacon O’Brien brings God’s message of love, mercy, and hope to others.
“As a Deacon, it is my hope to revitalize the faith of others. I go to nursing homes and the residents hear the Word of God and receive the Eucharist. At wake services, when people have lost a loved one, I hope to revitalize their faith so that people know that they can call on and rely on God to help them through the difficult times. In happy times such as a baptism or a wedding, God is there for them for the rest of their life.”
