Respect Life Month: Seeing the Dignity in Every Person
As Catholics we have been taught to always respect life. During October, we are invited to pray for the end of abortion and for all expectant mothers. We are also invited to reflect more deeply on the value of human life and the dignity of every person.

Life is sacred at every stage. From the child in the womb to the elderly neighbor who may feel forgotten, each person has value and purpose. As Catholics, we are called to recognize that dignity and treat others with the love and respect that Christ showed to everyone He encountered.
That can sound like a big responsibility, but often it begins with simple acts. It might mean checking in on a friend who is struggling, visiting an elderly relative, offering encouragement to someone who feels alone, or praying for those who are facing difficult circumstances. Small acts of kindness can make a bigger difference than we realize.
This month, take the time to especially think about young families and expectant mothers in need. Catholic Charities Maternity Services in Merrick serve all parents and children in need of diapers, wipes and other necessities. Perhaps you could help support this mission with donations and prayers. Your parish may also have a food pantry or other program that helps families in your community-- consider volunteering or making a donation. With our prayers, time, talent and treasures, we can show respect to our neighbor.
During Respect Life Month, we are encouraged to pray for a greater respect for human life and to ask God to help us be instruments of His love. Prayer changes hearts, including our own. It helps us see others through God's eyes and reminds us that every person (no matter how small) is someone for whom Christ gave His life.
Because every life is a gift. Every life has dignity. And every life matters. May God bless all unborn children and their mothers, and may we have the perseverance and courage to protect them.
